Scope of Use

SPS vinyl floor wastes are designed for robust, hygienic, and efficient drainage in commercial and industrial settings that utilise sheet vinyl flooring. Their construction ensures reliable water management, debris interception, and seamless integration with vinyl floors, thereby supporting safety and regulatory compliance.

SPS vinyl floor wastes are specialised drainage solutions specifically designed for wet areas that feature sheet vinyl flooring. Their main purposes are:

  • Efficient drainage: They remove surface water, prevent pooling, and maintain dry, safe floor conditions. They are essential in commercial kitchens, healthcare facilities, food preparation areas, and other high-traffic wet zones.
  • Seamless Integration with Vinyl Flooring: SPS vinyl floor waste systems are designed to firmly clamp and seal sheet vinyl, ensuring a watertight finish that prevents leaks and protects subfloor structures.
  • Debris Interception: Selected SPS vinyl floor waste systems feature basket or strainer designs that intercept and contain solid debris, including food particles and rubbish. This helps prevent blockages further down the drainage system and is particularly vital in trade waste environments such as restaurants and food factories.
  • Maintaining Hygiene: By preventing water accumulation and trapping debris, these floor wastes contribute to a hygienic and easy-to-clean environment, thereby reducing odour and contamination risks.

SPS vinyl floor wastes are widely used in the following settings:

  • Healthcare Facilities: Hygiene, slip resistance, and seamless finishes are essential.
  • Public Amenities and High-Traffic Wet Areas: Such as bathrooms, changing rooms, and bars, where efficient drainage and safety are priorities.
  • Commercial Kitchens and Food Processing Facilities: To intercept food waste and maintain compliance with trade waste regulations.
  • Refuse Rooms and Industrial Environments: To manage liquid and solid waste runoff.

Applications and Installation

  • Material Options: Available in ABS, stainless steel (304 or 316), and brass, these durable materials possess protective qualities, including resistance to corrosion, particularly in harsh environments.
  • Compatibility: Designed to fit a range of pipe materials, including PVC, copper, cast iron, and HDPE, using O-ring seals for a secure connection.
  • Vinyl Clamping Mechanism: A clamping ring secures the sheet vinyl into the grate assembly, ensuring a watertight seal and compatibility with professional vinyl flooring installations.
  • Height-adjustable design: This feature enables the precise alignment of the drain with the finished floor, thereby preventing water from pooling around it. This supports hygiene and slip-resistance requirements in environments such as kitchens and healthcare facilities.
  • The use of puddle flange fittings: Certain SPS vinyl floor wastes are equipped with a puddle flange, which creates a watertight seal around the pipe penetration, preventing water ingress and safeguarding the subfloor and structure from water damage.
  • The SPS retrofit design enables the installation of floor waste in existing floors that initially lacked a puddle flange, making it ideal for renovations, repairs, or upgrades without significant work.

Product Size

SPS vinyl floor wastes are compatible with various pipe materials and configurations, supporting compliance across diverse building types and layouts.

  • Pipe Suitability: 50mm, 80mm, 100mm, 150mm
  • Grate Size: 112mm, 117mm, 125, 135mm, 220mm
  • Spigot and O-ring design (100mm & 150mm) allows for compatibility with PVC, HDPE, cast iron and copper pipe.

Limitations on Use

  • Inadequate installation – Cutting the vinyl too tightly or too loosely around the drain can lead to uneven surfaces or water pooling.
  • If the vinyl is not level with the drain or the floor slope is improper, water may pool instead of draining properly. This can harm the vinyl and lead to hygiene concerns.
  • Vinyl can be susceptible to damage from use or inadequate cleaning, particularly in high-traffic areas such as drains.

Installation Requirements

  • Ensure the subfloor is clean, level and dry.
  • Choose the suitable vinyl floor waste assembly, such as those equipped with integrated clamp rings and/or puddle flanges to ensure a watertight seal.
  • Create a template of the drainage area. Position it over the drain and trace or tap around the edges to form an indentation for accurate marking.
  • Transfer these measurements to your vinyl sheet. Align the template with the markings on the vinyl flooring.
  • Use a jigsaw or utility knife to carefully cut out the shape of the drain opening from the vinyl flooring, adhering closely to the template. A heat gun, operated by a trained applicator, can soften rigid vinyl, making it easier to shape and fit around drains.
  • Position the cut vinyl over the drain to ensure it fits snugly without any gaps or overlaps. It is acceptable to use additional vinyl, as trimming can enhance the fit.
  • Apply adhesive to secure the vinyl around the drain and seal the edges to prevent water from seeping through. Ensure the vinyl is secured over any internal screws and use a strong adhesive at the top or within the screw holes to guarantee that moisture cannot penetrate past the screws.
  • Ensure that all installation work adheres to the requirements of the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and all relevant standards.
  • Refer to the product datasheet

Maintenance & Preventative Measures

  • Regularly clean the grate to remove debris and prevent clogs. Use biological cleaning products to ensure hygiene and minimise potential damage to the grate’s surface.
  • Regularly inspect the clamping system for any signs of damage or wear and tear, and ensure that a watertight seal remains intact.
  • Replace worn-out components, such as grates or seals.
  • Where applicable, use a strainer to prevent debris, such as hair or dirt, from entering the system.
  • Ensure the adhesives used during installation are moisture resistant and properly cured.
  • Use quality vinyl-specific floor wastes, such as those with integrated clamping rings.
  • Regularly clean the drain cover and its surrounding area to prevent the buildup of debris and harmful chemicals.
  • Check for any signs of water pooling or leakage and address them promptly.
